Is anonymous chat really anonymous?

"Anonymous" gets used for two entirely different properties, and conflating them is how people end up with a false sense of what they are protected from.

Anonymous to other users

This is the one you almost always get, and the one that matters day to day. The person you are talking to sees a nickname. They do not know your name, your face, where you live or what you do. Nothing links this conversation to any other identity you have.

Anonymous to the platform

This is the one that is almost never true, including here, and any service claiming otherwise while also promising moderation is describing something impossible.

Messages travel through servers. Connection data exists. Reported content has to be readable by someone, or reports cannot be investigated. A platform that genuinely could not see any content also could not act on abuse. Those are the same capability described from two directions.

Why not end-to-end encryption?

Because moderation and end-to-end encryption are directly in tension, and on a platform built around talking to strangers, moderation is the thing keeping it usable. E2E makes sense where you already know and trust the other party. In a room full of people you have never met, the ability to act on a report is worth more than cryptographic guarantees against the platform.

The honest framing is: BuzzChat protects you from other users, and holds enough to act when another user harms you. Treat anything you send as reviewable following a report, because that is exactly what it is.

What anonymity is not a defence against

It is not a defence against consequences for your own behaviour. Points, level, streak, vibe reputation and moderation history attach to the account, not to the nickname. Changing what you are called changes what people see, not what the platform knows.
