Why World Mode works
Why a map goes further than a matching queue
A matching queue is great when you want to talk now. Instant Match pairs you with the next person waiting. Smart Match goes a step further: it applies your preferences first, gender, age range, interests, and what you are looking for, so the person you meet is more likely to overlap with what you want.
World Mode opens more than that. You can see people before you speak to them. You can drift closer, read what someone is broadcasting, and approach because something about it interested you. Nothing obliges you to talk, and the absence of obligation is exactly what makes people willing to.
It also solves loitering, which sounds trivial and is not. Sometimes you want to be around other people without talking to any of them. In a queue that is impossible. On a map it is just standing near the fountain.
Inside the feature
What is actually in there
-
01
People, live
Other players moving in real time, each with a nickname and optionally a country flag. Not bots dressed as ambience.
-
02
Thought bubbles
Float a short line above your head. It is an opener that does not require picking a target first.
-
03
Terrain worth crossing
Grass, a meandering river, bridges, lakes with islands, woodland and a paved city street: landmarks that make "meet me by the lake" mean something.
-
04
Places to go into
Buildings along the street with doors that do something, so the map has destinations rather than just space.
-
05
Things that are yours
Bubble skins and cosmetics that make you recognisable to people who have met you before.
-
06
A minimap
So you can see where the crowd is and head towards it, or deliberately away from it.
Step by step
Your first five minutes on the map
- 01
Spawn on the plaza
You start at the west end of the city street, where most people are.
- 02
Move
Arrow keys or WASD on a desktop, a virtual joystick on a phone. It plays like a handheld RPG because that is what it is imitating.
- 03
Broadcast something
Set a thought bubble. It is by far the lowest-effort way to get approached rather than approaching.
- 04
Say hello to someone standing still
People who are moving with purpose are usually going somewhere. People standing near a landmark are usually open to being interrupted.
Side-by-side
World Mode vs random queue
Both get you talking to strangers. The difference is who chooses and how much obligation rides on the first message.
| What matters | World Mode | Random queue |
|---|---|---|
| Choose who | You walk up to people you actually want to talk to. | The queue picks someone. You take what you get or rematch. |
| Pressure | Low. You can wander without speaking to anyone. | Higher. You are instantly in a one-to-one conversation. |
| Loitering | Fine. Standing near the fountain without talking is normal. | Impossible. You are either matched or waiting to be. |
| First message | Say hi. A private chat opens only if they say hi back. | You are already chatting. The opener is the whole negotiation. |
Keep this in mind
Both people have to say hi
World Mode does not drop you into a private chat because you walked near someone. You say hi, they say hi back, and only then does a one-to-one thread open. Either person can ignore a hi with no awkwardness and no penalty.
Quick answers
Questions people actually ask
The short version of the questions people usually need answered before they begin.
Is World Mode a game?
It borrows a game's controls and art, but there is nothing to win. It is a social space that happens to have geography. The movement exists so that meeting people has texture, not so you can score.
Are the other characters real people?
The players are. You will also see wandering animals as ambience, which are clearly not players.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. There is an on-screen joystick, and the camera is zoomed so the pixel art stays legible on a small screen.
Can people see where I am in real life?
No. Your position on the map is a position in a fictional world. The only geographic signal anywhere is an optional country flag.
Do I need to download anything?
No. It runs in the browser.
How do I start a private chat from the map?
Say hi to someone nearby. A one-to-one chat opens only when they say hi back. Until then, you can keep wandering, read thought bubbles, or approach someone else.
